Super-cheap natural gas prices appear to be coming to an end but should stay low enough to give gas an increasingly prominent role in the nation’s energy picture.

The use of gas to generate electricity has already increase substantially, and the low prices have convinced some businesses to switch from electric heat to gas.

Home heating customers also are likely to see moderate bills again next winter.

And natural gas is likely to keep expanding its niche in transportation, powering cars and especially commercial truck fleets.

How cheap is natural gas? Right now, crude oil is eight times as expensive as natural gas when comparing equal amounts of energy produced, and will still be four times as expensive even if gas prices climb an additional 75 percent.
