Delta Airlines is using Bakken crude as a source for making jet fuel at its refinery in Pennsylvania.

The company recently received its first Bakken shipment, via rail, after deciding to replace higher cost foreign crude oil supplies. Monroe Energy, a Delta subsidiary, had slowed production at the 185,000 barrel-per-day refinery in November and Bakken crude is expected to improve profits and retain jobs for the refinery’s 400 employees.

Gov. Jack Dalrymple announced the first Delta shipment and said it’s another example of how Bakken crude is reducing the country’s dependence on foreign oil. He said Phillips 66, another East Coast refinery, committed to shipping Bakken crude to its plant in New Jersey.

This is Delta Airlines’ second involvement in the Bakken boom. It announced it’s beginning air service between Dickinson and its Minneapolis hub starting June. 10.  Convenient for them!
